IMPORTANT POLICY CLARIFICATION

No student may receive more than one award in any given year and each student may only receive a particular award once in his/her Fairs career.

YOUNG CITIZENS AWARD
“in recognition of citizenship”

OPPORTUNITY TO BECOME ONE OF 200 YOUNG CITIZENS ACROSS CANADA

• The Young Citizens program, which focuses on citizenship, will be a complementary component of the Heritage Fairs,  Students will present the results of their research (nationally) in a video format.
• Students chosen should demonstrate a combination of oral and writing skills, organization and planning, as well as artistic and graphic skills that are used effectively to communicate a topic or story to a broader audience.  This student will be an ambassador for their Regional Fair and for Ontario.

  CANADA'S NATIONAL HISTORY SOCIETY AWARD
“in recognition of the project that best integrates the use of written research and visual materials as inseparable elements to successfully present the topic”

COMPLIMENTARY SUBSCRIPTION TO KAYAK MAGAZINE OR LES DEBROUILLARDS 

• This award is intended to remind students that there are many ways to tell a story.
• The project should demonstrate a combination of writing skills, organization and planning, as well as artistic and graphic skills that are used effectively to communicate a topic or story to a broader audience.

 ONTARIO HERITAGE FAIRS ASSOCIATION
FOUNDERS' AWARD

“In recognition of exceptional enthusiasm and dedication to history and heritage.”

• Project must have a Canadian theme. Project can interpret various aspects of Canadian heritage on a local, provincial, national or international level.
• Student portrays enthusiasm for learning about history, heritage and culture.
• Student demonstrates determination and dedication to researching a topic.
• Student is eager to share his/her passion for heritage with peers and community.

  ONTARIO GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY AWARD
“ In recognition of outstanding student achievement that includes the application of genealogic research.”

• Project must include research that records the history of someone who lived in or is living in what is now Ontario (formerly Canada West, Upper Canada, or Quebec Colony, parts were in Rupertsland, Northwest Territories, and Manitoba). This person may be living or dead, famous or not. It could even be you!
• Project work may include an important event in an individual’s life, which should at least include place of origin; reason for coming to Ontario (if outside Ontario); information about family and careers.

• Student must demonstrate enthusiasm for, and reflection on, the topic.

ONTARIO WOMEN'S HISTORY NETWORK AWARD

"In recognition of a project with a primary focus on women in Canadian History"

• Project must have a primary focus on women in Canadian history and the ways in which women have contributed to Canadian society.  Project may deal with Canadian women at the local, provincial, national or international level.
• Project must provide evidence that the student has thought critically about one or more of the following: historical significance, primary and secondary sources, continuity and change, cause and consequence, possible interpretations of the student's chosen theme.
• Students must be able to present the project in an engaging and convincing fashion.

ONTARIO LIBRARY ASSOCIATION AWARD
"In recognition of outstanding student achievement that includes the use of Ontario's libraries in the research and preparation of the Heritage Fairs project."

• Students must report which library or libraries were visited, the library staff they worked with, and how the library and/or staff were helpful to the overal project.
• Students may include any type of library: i.e. public libraries, school libraries, special libraries such as church libraries, hospital libraries, corporate libraries, historical institution libraries, and others.

MULTICULTURAL HISTORY SOCIETY OF ONTARIO AWARD
“in recognition of excellent student achievement in research
that exemplifies the diverse culture of Ontario and Canada.”

• Project must have a Canadian theme.  Project can interpret various aspects of Canadian history on a local, provincial, national or international level.
• Project must showcase or reflect upon one or more of the many cultures that make up the diverse Canadian mosaic.  (eg. Aboriginal, Black, Chinese, etc.)

"reveals the significant impact made by Aboriginals in Canadian history"

"The OHRC’s Ontario Human Rights Award is given in recognition of student achievement in the research and preparation of a Heritage Fair Project about the history of human rights in Ontario."
